The hook formula: one sentence decides 300 views or 300,000

The hook formula is the one thing we test before anything else. We ran an experiment: same information, same delivery, same editing. We changed only the first sentence. The difference was 299,700 views.

Weak hook: Today I want to talk to you about mortgage pre-approvals. Views: 312. Strong hook: Your bank pre-approved you for $800,000. Here is why that number could ruin you. Views: 300,148. Same information. Same person. Different first sentence.

What follows is our whole hook strategy, drawn from 200 client scripts written in English, Hinglish, Gujarati and Punjabi.

Why does the first sentence decide everything?

Instagram decides whether to show your Reel to a wider audience based on how many people watch past the first three seconds. If 80% of your sample audience watches past three seconds, the algorithm pushes the video broadly. If 20% watch, the video is quietly buried. Your entire video can be excellent. If the first sentence does not work, almost nobody will see any of it.

The five elements of a strong hook

1. Specificity. 67% of South Asian homebuyers in the GTA outperforms most Canadians. 2. Stakes. The hook must connect to something the viewer cares about losing or gaining. 3. Novelty. The viewer must feel they are about to hear something they have not heard before. 4. Tension. A good hook creates an incomplete loop. The viewer needs to know what happens next. 5. Brevity. The hook should be one sentence if possible.

What is the four-part hook structure?

Our highest-retention hook across all clients reads: CMHC ne yeh naya rule lagu kar diya, bahut logon ko pata nahi. Average watch-through, 78%. We call it the Hinglish hook formula, and its four parts are what we now build every script around. First, a named institution or authority: CMHC, CRA, TD Bank, Statistics Canada. Specificity signals credibility instantly. Second, a verb that implies change: lagu kar diya, band kar diya. Change creates urgency. Third, a scarcity signal: bahut logon ko pata nahi. That one triggers the share instinct, because viewers want to be the person who passes on important information. Fourth, no introduction at all. Never open with Hi, main [Name] hun. Start in the middle of the story.

Why does Hinglish work for South Asian professionals?

The South Asian diaspora in Canada code-switches constantly. A conversation with a desi colleague might start in English, switch to Hindi for an emotional point, and end in Gujarati or Punjabi. That is identity in action. When a Reel opens in the same rhythm, the brain registers that this person is like me. Watch time goes up. Saves go up. Shares go up. Which language a hook lands in is a per-client decision, not a per-city one.

Which three hook categories always perform?

The announcement hook works for any industry where regulations matter, and it wins because it is genuinely useful and time-sensitive. The shocking stat hook leads with the single most surprising number you have, and it is worth using only when the number is genuinely extreme. The third-person story hook puts a named desi character into the opening line: Ramesh, Simran, Kinjal, Bhavesh. Named characters make an abstract scenario feel like something that happened to someone.

Why do most hooks fail?

Most hooks fail because they open with a generic statement instead of putting a relatable character into a specific conflict. Compare two openings for the same video. "Top 5 cities to live in with your family" is a list. "What can you get for 1 crore in Ahmedabad right now?" is a question the audience is already asking in their head. The second one stops a thumb. One creator ran that Ahmedabad comparison with no intro and no "Hi, I am back with another video", and it took 46,000 views in a few hours. The hook itself was the value.

The word-by-word visual rule

Every line in your script needs a matching visual. Not related to. Matching. If your script says "Elon Musk's girlfriend lives in Barrie, Canada", the screen should show Elon Musk, his girlfriend and Barrie landmarks, not a stock city skyline. This is the single biggest gap between a 500-view video and a 500K video on the same account. Word by word, every visual earns its place or it does not belong there.

Why do hooks work differently in ads?

Organic content can tell a story. Ads cannot afford to. When a client is spending money on Facebook or Instagram promotion, the structure gets blunter: no market trend story, no 30-second setup. Every second spent building context is a second not converting, because the goal of an ad is a lead rather than a narrative. The hook still comes first, but it names the offer instead of opening a loop.

Common hook mistakes

Announcing the topic: Today we are going to talk about... is a skip. Starting with credentials: Hi, I am [Name], a realtor with 10 years of experience... Nobody cares about your experience until they already trust you. Being vague to seem credible: Many experts believe... These phrases signal you could not find a specific source.

How do you write a hook that works?

Write the hook last. Finalise the story first, then come back and ask what the single most relatable, specific, scroll-stopping way to open it would be. The rules that survive 200 scripts are short: no greetings or introductions, no context setting before the hook, start mid-story or with a bold specific claim, use numbers and city names and recognisable references, and if your desi audience would ask "wait, what?" then you are close.

Write the hook last. Figure out the most surprising, most useful, most high-stakes thing in your video. Then build a hook around that single moment.

The hook is not a preview of your video. It is a reason to keep watching. There is a difference.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Reels hooks fail for South Asian creators in Canada?

Most hooks fail because they open with a generic statement instead of placing a relatable character in a specific conflict. South Asian viewers in Canada stop scrolling when they see themselves: someone who looks like them, in a place they know, facing a situation they have lived.

What is the 3-second rule for Instagram Reels?

The 3-second rule means your Reel must give the viewer a reason to stay within the first 3 seconds, before their thumb moves. Start mid-story or mid-conflict, not with an introduction or greeting.

What makes a good hook for South Asian content creators in Canada?

A good hook opens with a named desi character in a specific relatable conflict, uses Hinglish, Gujarati, or Punjabi naturally, references specific Canadian details (CMHC, FHSA, Brampton, Surrey), and makes the viewer feel the story is about someone exactly like them.

Key takeaways

  • The first sentence determines whether 20% or 80% of viewers keep watching
  • Specific beats vague: numbers, names, places always outperform general claims
  • Name a specific institution, use a verb that signals change, add a scarcity signal
  • Never open with your name, a greeting or a topic announcement
  • Hinglish, Gujarati and Punjabi hooks consistently outperform English-only for desi audiences
  • Every line of script needs a matching visual, word by word
  • Write the hook last, after you know the most valuable moment in your video

The bottom line on the hook formula

The hook formula comes down to one decision: does your first sentence give a specific person a specific reason to stay. Two hundred scripts in, the pattern holds. Name the number, name the fear, or name the mistake, and do it before the viewer's thumb moves. Everything else in the script is negotiable. Once the hook is landing, make sure the views turn into conversations.
